Faro | Portugal

Fly to Faro with British Airways on Saturdays and with easyJet on Thursdays.

A city that's a feast for the eyes, the centre of Faro is less than 15 minutes from the airport. There's a grand entrance to the Old Town in the form of a monumental arch on a Moorish wall - and the Arco da Vila leads to those cobbled streets that we love so much.

Explore the city on foot and stroll through the narrow and quiet streets of Cidade Velha, the oldest part, to the Cathedral of Faro which is a national monument of Portugal. Also worth checking out is the 18th-century Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Capela dos Ossos. Apart from being a baroque masterpiece, the Capela is built from the bones and skulls of more than 1,000 monks.

With 250km of coastline you won't struggle to find your perfect beach in the Algarve. Praia do Martinhal in Sagres is popular with surfers while Praia de Falesia, east of Albufeira, sits amid a backdrop of cliffs topped with a pine forest. Stunning Praia da Marinha near Lagos, with its coves and plinths, is considered one of the mostbeautiful beaches in the world. - one of the most famous features is its double-arched rock known as the Cathedral or the M Rock. If you're not heading down to the Algarve, beach life can be found at ha de Faro, 20 minutes by car, or an hour by foot and ferry, from Faro.

The Algarve has been popular with golfers since 1966, when Sir Henry Cotton designed the first championship course at Penina Golf Club. It now attracts hundreds of thousands of avid golfers to its award-winning courses each year. The most famous, however, is the Dom Pedro Old Course Golf Club, designed by acclaimed British golf course architect Frank Pennink in the late 1960s and set amid pine trees.
